Emma Raducanu and Leylah Fernandez will make history on Wednesday when they both climb onto the tennis court to battle for the girls’ US Open title.
Raducanu and Fernandez both made the fourth round last year as juniors but it will be Fernandez who now goes one step further and faces the competition at Flushing Meadows.
The finalists may be relatively young — Raducanu is 19 and Fernandez just 16 — but they are no strangers to tennis.
Raducanu and Fernandez are in their first grand slam final, but at the Junior French Open, that was Fernandez who was the runner-up.
Her opponent, the world No. 17 Raducanu, made it to the fourth round, and her next opponent will be Maria Sharapova.
Last year Fernandez, was the sole French woman in the girls’ draw, with two others going out in the second round and Raducanu losing her first round match, also to Sharapova.
Also on Wednesday, the girls’ US Open doubles final pits a Latvian squad against a team of young American stars, like Fernandez and Raducanu.
