Iowa State women head to the top of the Missouri Valley

(CNN) – Iowa State broke a tie early in the second half, building a 25-point lead before holding off Jackson State 47-37 on Thursday night to remain undefeated and undefeated in the Missouri Valley Conference.

In a game that saw 10 ties and nine lead changes, Iowa State was led by 15 points from Monte Morris with a half-dozen players finishing in double figures.

The Cyclones (21-4, 9-0 MVC) shot 56.7 percent (15-for-26) from the field in the first half, taking a 24-20 lead into the break. Jackson State (9-17, 3-7) shot a woeful 28.8 percent (7-for-26) from the field in the first half, and 11 percent (1-for-11) from 3-point range. The Tigers would get no closer than nine points in the second half.

The margin reached 20 points in the second half when a Morris trey capped a 17-1 run that gave Iowa State a 38-24 lead with 12:26 remaining.

Morris buried a 3-pointer to push the lead to 20, at 44-28, with 6:15 left, and the Cyclones held on from there.

It was a first game win for Jackson State coach Dean Lee since taking over the job in 2017.

The Tigers hit eight of their first 11 shots, but shot 2-for-8 over the last six minutes.

Giddy Potts led Jackson State with 15 points.

The Cyclones will host Loyola, Illinois on Saturday night.
