CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Charges have been laid in the hit-and-run that killed a 6-year-old boy and left his mother critically injured, according to the Miami-Dade Police Department.
Alejandro Pascual Lara, 20, turned himself in, officials said. Authorities earlier said he was the driver who fled the scene of the crash that killed Armani Muñoz last Sunday.
Pascual Lara is charged with hit-and-run driving resulting in serious bodily injury, a second-degree felony.
Officials earlier said they believed the driver did not know that Armani, who had just been picked up from his mother’s workplace, was inside his sport utility vehicle when he hit him at around 1:30 a.m. at Northwest 27th Avenue and 29th Street in Coral Gables.
According to Miami-Dade Police spokesman Det. Alvaro Zabaleta, a witness who is a relative of Pascual Lara gave police a statement that indicated Pascual had just left a party in a multi-residential area and was driving a stolen vehicle.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, the registered owner of the SUV, who is the mother of the stolen vehicle, said the passenger and driver had run away with three bottles of alcohol.
“At the time, she said that she was asleep in the front seat because there were three children in the vehicle and the front seat passenger was actually getting the children and getting them out of the vehicle when she was struck by the vehicle,” Zabaleta said.
The woman also told officers the people who fled in the SUV were known to her, Zabaleta said.
Armani’s mother was hospitalized after the incident. He died at a hospital on Saturday.
