Emma Raducanu is Britain’s most successful female all-rounder

British teenager Emma Raducanu beat her previous high of eighth to win the US Open tournament in Ohio.

Raducanu, 16, beat Canada’s Leylah Fernandez 7-6 (7-3) 6-2 on Monday in straight sets.

The match came a week after Raducanu beat China’s Liu Ximei in the semi-finals.

“I’m really excited to have done it, it means a lot,” said Raducanu, who is British number one.

Raducanu, who made her senior debut in August, added: “I just played my best and that was enough. I’m really happy, I always play well here so I’m really excited.”

Raducanu, who is now in the top 50 in the WTA rankings, has played eight Futures tournaments this year, winning three, losing two and reaching the last eight in another.

British number three Katy Dunne lost the first set of her second-round match to Australian former world number 23 Samantha Stosur 6-2 but rebounded to win the second 6-4.

New Zealand’s Marina Erakovic lost in the first round to former US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, 6-4 7-5.
